The Best Man Speech Order – Why You Shouldn’t Worry About It

The best man speech order is not what you should be bothered about as there isn’t any fixed rule regarding the order of wedding speeches. The wedding couple, that is the groom and the bride decide who should be giving a wedding speech during their wedding reception and depending on either the tradition or personal preferences they decides on the order in which the speakers would deliver their wedding speeches. The most widely accepted order of wedding speeches is where the father of the bride speakers first followed by the groom and the best man (in that order).

In the weddings of today, the best man speech is an integral part of this great American tradition. So it is imperative that the best man deliver a strong and enthralling speech to spice up the wedding for all who attend. These best man speeches not only set the tone for the rest of the wedding, but also they lengthen the time of the wedding and provide ample entertainment for the wedding guests. Whereas the ring bearer and the bride’s maid play relatively passive roles in the traditional wedding, the best man speech is an opportunity for the best man to make a statement.

However, despite the importance and significance of the best man’s role as a speech deliverer, it is commonly accepted that the best man speech order does not matter too much. Whether the speech is delivered at the very beginning or the very end of the wedding does not really matter – what really matters is that the speech is given with good posture, brilliance and with high regard as it is addressed to the groom and bride. Never mind that the speech could be right after the reception or a few hours after, it is still important what the speech contains. As long as the speech does not contradict itself or plagiarize any other outside sources then it should be a sufficiently adequate speech.

Great things happen when the speech is an impeccable one, but the crowd may boo if any crass humor is involved in the best man speech. People often recommend that these best man speeches address the couple directly, wishing them good wealth, prosperity, and a wonderful wedding celebration. Comments about the wedding cake or the weather that day are optional but not mandatory. Jokes and light humor are frequently well received, however dirty jokes are not accepted. The wedding should be a day of celebration and rejoicing, and too many dirty jokes will ruin the mood of the event and sidetrack the wonderful ceremony.

Often in retrospect, the best man speech order seems not to matter as much, especially if the best man speeches serve a purpose and make a point.

I have experience of being a best man and giving best man speeches a couple of times and in both cases I talked to the groom (and the bride also) and told them that it would be nice if I could speak right after the groom and in both the times the grooms happily agreed. No big deal.
